Coronavirus update: COVID-19 cases in India cross 35,000, death toll at 1,147. State-wise tally

The total number of coronavirus cases in India has increased to 35,043 today, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

• India has passed the bleak milestone of 35,000 coronavirus cases, while states have seen yet another record increase in patient numbers. A staggering 1,993 new cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours. The total number of coronavirus patients in India has increased to 35,043, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

• The death toll from COVID-19 rose to 73 on Thursday, the highest recorded so far in a single day. The deadly new coronavirus has claimed the lives of 1,147 people in India.

• Maharashtra accounted for almost half of the national COVID-19 count on Thursday. Up to 583 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in the state. With that, the number of COVID-19 in Maharashtra increased to 10,498. On Thursday, the state recorded more than 15 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 459. Maharashtra became the first state to witness 10,000 cases of coronavirus.

With 313 new cases on Thursday, coronavirus cases in Gujarat rose to 4,395. After Maharashtra, Gujarat was the worst state affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The total number of coronavirus cases in Delhi has risen to 3,515, while 76 new cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours. The death toll in the national capital was 59.

Madhya Pradesh has seen a decrease in the number of new COVID-19 cases. The state has added 99 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

Tamil Nadu added 161 new cases on Thursday, bringing the state's total coronavirus count to 2,323.

To date, more than 25% of coronavirus patients have recovered from the disease. At least 8,888 people have been cured, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Currently, there are 25,007 active coronavirus patients in India.

As the 40-day national closure ends on May 4, India is planning to phase out the closure. Initially, restrictions will be relaxed in areas that have not reported cases of coronavirus in the past 28 days.

The new coronavirus has infected more than 3.2 million people and has killed at least 233,000 worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University. To date, the United States has reported more than one million cases of COVID-19 and at least 63,000 deaths. The World Health Organization warned that Europe remains "very prey to this pandemic", accounting for 46% of cases and 63% of deaths worldwide.
